The cotton gin invented by Ely Whitney in 1793.  His machine could clean 50 pounds of lint from cotton a day. It also made the separation of cotton from seeds faster.  As a result, cotton a very profitable crop and many farmers in the Southern States rich.  Because they were now producing cotton faster and in large amounts, the British began importing cotton for their textile industry.  This helped the British increase their production and ushered in the Industrial Revolution.
