The prophase of mitosis consists of the condensation of the chromatin that is present in the cell. This chromatin condenses in order to ready itself for replication, and forms structures called chromosomes. Each chromosome consists of two chromatids. Therefore, if there are 5 chromosomal pairs, there are 10 chromosomes. Each chromosome has two chromatids, which means that there are 20 chromatids.
